message to the man holding him there, jimmy lee dykes. the standoff began five days ago when police say dykes kidnapped the boy from his school bus after shooting the driver. jonathan serrie is live at the scene in midland city, alabama. what's the latest? >> reporter: no resolution as the hostage standoff goes into a fifth afternoon. however, authorities say they are in constant communication with 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes communicating through the pvc pipe that provides ventilation from the surface to his underground bunker. authorities say they have no reason to believe that any physical harm has come to the 5-year-old hostage. listen. >> mr. dykes, through our communications we've been able to -- he's told us that he's got an electric heater and some blankets inside and he's taking care of him. he's also allowed us to provide coloring books medication toys. >> reporter: and the sheriff goes on to say i want to thank him for taking care of our child, that is very important. the 5-year-old boy was abducted from this school bus that you're looking at in this video tuesday afternoon.

hostage team stormed an underground bunker, where this man, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes, was holding a 5-year-old, known only as ethan, captive. >> very special child. he has been through a lot. he has endured a lot. by the grace of god, you know, >> reporter: the two spent 143 hours in the underground shelter, stocked with supplies. law enforcement officials watching closely every minute from the ground and the air, using small, unmanned aircraft. based on sketches from a neighbor who says he was once inside dykes' bunker, we now know the shelter had a hatch and ladder and pvc pipe that, at times was used to communicate with dykes actually ran sideways, 50 yards under ground to his property. authorities were able to get a camera inside the bunker. though they're not saying how. monday they saw dykes holding a gun. believing that ethan was in danger, they decided to breach the bunker. neighbors heard an explosive, which authorities say was a distraction device. when the rescue team entered the bunker, they found dykes dead and ethan unharmed. it all took seconds. ethan was now in an ambu
-old hostage in an underground bunker for a fourth day. what do we know about jimmy lee dykes? >> reporter: he's been in that bunker for more than 72 hours now and we're getting the first look at him. the photograph shows a man who is 65 years owed, 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds, we're told, with white hair and a beard. we know that this is the man, police say, on tuesday climbed aboard a school bus and shot the driver and took that kindergartner. we're also seeing today that the bus, the crime scene, is being moved. it was moved earlier today. as we said, it has been treated as a crime scene for the past few days. the dale county school board came and sent a truck to move it back to the school lot. so that part of the investigation is continuing but they are still inside that bunker, wolf. >> what's the latest? has there been any movement at all in terms of hostage -- in terms of the hostage situation continuing negotiations, talks? >> reporter: we know that there are local, state, and federal authorities here negotiating. they are speaking through this pvc pipe that goes more than 20 or 30 f
